SlideBoom Presentation

I think the presentation with PowerPoint is more effective than video. It brings the lesson before the students eyes by providing larger visuals along with text. The video version is ok to use if the learner is sitting at the computer and researching the information for themselves. I would prefer seeing the text where I can take notes rather than hearing the video. The images I used provided students with a view of what they were using everyday. They may have seen these tools on the computer but never knew their names or the purpose of the address, menu, tool bar, etc. The addition of text adds to the message being portrayed in the images. It explains what the images talking about which is the sharing of knowledge. Students can use SlideBoom to search and share presentations with other people. These are live PowerPoint presentations with animations and narrations. They also can learn new information by searching for informational presentations. I don't see myself using SlideBoom alot to share presentations with friends, but I am glad I learned how to add narrations to PowerPoint. This will definitely be a handy tool I can use in the future.

Thing #18

I visited educational videos on how to use or not to use PowerPoint effectively for presentations. YouTube and TeacherTube are great ways to learn information from videos. The videos can show you step by step instructions on how to use PowerPoint,Excel, Word, etc. My son would use YouTube to watch videos, but I never had a interest in the site. I thought it was just for watching videos. Now I know better. These sites are great ways for students to learn how to do things with instructions provided. They can learn alot of new information also by searching for anything they choose. I would use these sites with students to learn, as mentioned before, PowerPoint or to gather information. Both sites provide a means for students as well as professionals to learn and share information. I like both sites and will use them in the future.

Thing #17

I previewed The Tech Teachers and The TechPodzone podcasts. I have really become interested in technology from this class. I really love how I can create blogs and subscribe to articles and podcasts in Google Reader. I listened to The Tech Teachers Show and 21st Century Skills-Web 2.0. I want to learn all I can about technology because I have been afraid and clueless. Now I am excited about the prospect of using all I have learned. I think everything I am learning is so cool and innovative. I like the idea of creating and using podcasts. Through this excitement, in a way I wish I was back in the classroom to use all I have learned with students. After this class, I think I would enjoy being a computer or technology teacher. I would definitely use podcasts with students. I think anytime technology is used students would be motivated to learn. They would enjoy recording podcasts commercials, health programs, shows, etc. They could put their podcasts on the school website. No I have never used podcasts with my former students or in my personal/professional life. I am just learning about them. I would definitely use them with students in the classrom to enhance learning and introduce them to the world of technology.

Thing #16

LibraryThing is a great tool for people who love reading books. Although I admit I am not a frequent book reader. It allows readers to create a catalog of their favorite books. What a great way to remember what was read and recommend the book to other people. I can see this as a valuable tool in the classroom and in someone's personal life. In the classroom, students can keep track of all the books they have read and their favorites. LibraryThing is like joining a book club online. Students can share books with their classrooms while adding reviews and recommendations. This could be a way to really get students reading. They can also know who is reading the same books they like. Students could create graphs to see which books are being read the most and the least. LibraryThing is a great tool for people who love reading books and join book clubs like Oprah once had on her show. I can see the benefits of using LibraryThing in and out of the classroom.

I admit I am not a fan of Delicious. I would prefer adding my favorite websites to Favorites or Bookmarking them. Even though Delicious makes them more organized, I have no problem finding my favorite websites in my Favorites folder. I think it is time consuming to go to Delicious instead of just clicking on Favorites while you are in Internet Explorer. Nevertheless, here are 7 websites I chose that dealt with Web 2.0 Tools. I am excited about learning some of these tools, but some are a waste of time or similar to other methods. I found a cool website called slideshare that has PowerPoint presentations from different professional fields. If I want education, I can just chose education, business, etc. Some sites are unique and would be valuable to me in my personal and professional life. Students could see examples of PowerPoints and learn how they should be done. I really like this site and would recommend it to other professionals.

Thing #7a

In my blog reader, I read an article about how teachers are using sound in many different ways. One teacher had students create stories using sound and without text. They used FindSounds.com to locate sounds and Audacity, an audio editting program, to create soundscape stories. Another teacher is using Scratch write interative stories. Scratch allows students to record or import sounds to help tell their stories. The advanced features of Scratch are allowing some students to use their stories to create computer games. They are also using Flicker and Creative Commons to find pictures to include in their stories. Teachers are finding creative ways to use sound in their classroms. I would have never thought to use sound to create a story nor had knowledge of the different sound softwares available for classroom use. I am learning so much new information and can't believe I have been behind on technology. I think alot of teachers do not know the Web 2.0 tools that are available or ways they can use the Internet for communication. I think their needs to be more trainings for teachers. I think they would use these tools if they had more knowledge and experiences.

Thing 12"

I chose to create a templete from the Web 2.0 tool LetterPop. LetterPop allows you to create newsletters, scrapbooks, and flyers using templates. This is a newsletter where I have added pictures and information about myself. LetterPop is a great tool students can use to create newsletters about the class, school, or themselves. There are many templates to choose from that includes holidays and other things. I like that photos can be added to the templates. Students would love seeing themselves while adding text. This also helps improve their writing skills. LetterPop could be used in reading, language arts, and even social studies. Students could pretend they are a person from the past, include pictures, and use the template to write about their life and experiences. I really like LetterPop and could also use it in my personal life. I would use it to write invitations and create flyers besides using it for newsletters. LetterPop is a great tool for students as well as adults.

Thing #13

I created this image generator using Image Chef. I decided to use a wanted poster to add my picture. I also added text and chose "Wanted For Being A Thinker, Doer, Achiever. I chose this advertisement because it can be used for a student who has excelled the most in the classroom. It can be used similar to the student of the week. It is a motivator for students to do their best and for recognizing achievement. I would have a contest to recognize the most creative image generator. I also chose a cereal box from Image Chef. What a great way to spark interest in students. Almost everyone likes cereal. They could create images on the boxes to go along with a commerical. Image generators can spark creativity in students while helping them become thinkers.

Thing #12

This slideshow shows pictures of the weather and different types of clouds. I would use this slide in a lesson on different kinds of natural disasters, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. I would also use the slides as visual storytelling. The students would create stories from looking at the events surrounding the natural disaster. It could also be used with a lesson on clouds. The students could identify the type of cloud and compare the cloud to the natural disaster. They would also explain how the cloud contributed to weather that is being seen in the picture.

Thing #11

This is a picture showing large clouds over a city. The theme I chose is weather/clouds. I have used Google images to download and copy pictures, but this is my first experience using Flicker. It is a great tool for students to use to upoad their pictures and download pictures from other people for assignments. This has a great collection of images like a library. I conducted a search using diasters and a collection of pictures were displayed. I would use Flicker in all subject areas. I would use it to allow students to create visual stories using pictures instead of text to tell them. Other students could get in groups and try to develop a story from the pictures. Students could also use pictures that match words and the list goes on. I don't know if I would use Flicker in my personal life as much as I would in the classroom. I would probably stick with the old fashioned way of using photo albums. In the classroom, students would love searching in groups to locate photos for their assignments or projects. I would definitely utilize Flicker as a classroom teacher.

I am learning so many new things about technology and the Internet. I had never heard of Creative Commons which allows users to use copyrighted material with some restrictions. The author's work is shared which allows for collaboration with other people. I have never seen this logo on websites. Creative Commons can be used by teachers and students without worrying whether copyright laws are broken when they use pictures, songs, written material, etc. for classroom use. Now students are free to be creative and borrow ideas from another person which sparks creativity. They are able to "use, learn, and become inspired" from the work of other people. Students can use pictures for powerpoint, digital stories, use songs, etc. freely. I would have never thought about copywriting a blog. I need to get on board with the digital age because I don't own a digital camara. I still use 35mm cameras. The only time I have shared content on the web is through my courses at APSU in blogs and discussion forums. I don't even subscribe to Facebook or other social networking sites. I don't see many negatives for using Creative Commons sense the rules have been set and permission has been granted for the material to be used. Other than a person not finding what they need on Creative Commons and wanting to use copyrighted material instead, this is a great way to motivate students to become creative artists.

Thing #8

I noticed that the wikis' organization were basically the same. The wikis I viewed had a home page with navigation tools on the left that had topics pertaining to the wiki. They had a discussion page or forum where threads could be posted. Each wiki included pictures and feeds to subscribe to their blog. Most wikis had websites that would provide further information on the subject, some did not. One wiki, Code Blue, helped others learn about the human body through an online medical clinic. These wiki had a wealth of information with websites and patient data. Another wiki, Lets Go West, includes maps and subjects pertaining to the Oregon Trail. The last wiki, Primary Math, shared what the students were learning in math with other students around the world. This wiki was missing websites to find additional information on the topic. All of these wikis were organized in the same manner.

I could use wikis in my personal life to organize lists of information, when I go on a trip and want to list items to take. I could also use them if I was planning an event, at home or work, and wanted other people to suggest activities or things needed. In the classroom, there are all kinds of uses for wikis. The students could let other students know what they are learning in other places. Students could help people learn and gather more information on a topic of interest. A wiki could be used for planning field trips and events like field day or a carnival. The students could suggest want they want at these events. There are many uses for wikis in the classroom and one's personal and professional life.

Criteria for moderating a viral video

This article proves how valuable commenting or responding to a blog can be for the author and other viewers. Sarah posted a 2 minute video response, on You Tube, to President Obama's Speech in September. She received thousands of comments which were positive, negative, supportive, and critical. Her mother set personal critieria for moderating the comments. She wanted to remove all comments that were disparaging to Sarah or the Preseident, but chose not to do so. I believe she was right to leave some of the critical comments that didn't use profanity. It is important to see both sides view on a subject. This helps the author and other readers gain insight and knowledge. It leaves them open to decide their view on the subject matter at hand. People found Sarah's response so enlightening that they felt compelled to post their response whether positive or negative. It got people to talking, thinking, and communicating. We can see the Internet has become a powerful tool. Alot can be said in a few seconds or minutes that can change the world. When people exchange dialogue in a positive manner, things happen and learning takes place. Blogs provide a valuable medium for people to express their ideas and opinions to others while receiving feedback.

Thing #7

The ability of the reader to leave a post for a blog is important because it allows the author and reader to share ideas. The reader may give their opinion of the blog and this can be eye opening experience for the author. The author may change his or her view on the subject. It also allows the author to see what other people are saying about their blog. People may agree or disagree with the subject which is perfectly fine. The reader can share their reasons for agreeing or disagreeing with the author. Commenting also tells the author how many people are viewing their blog. The reader can also share their blog with the author. Commenting is a valuable tool and a way for the reader and author to connect and share feelings and ideas.

My experiences commenting on posts has been good, and I view them now as useful tools. This is my first time ever making a post to a blog. I am learning new things everything. I had no idea what a blog or RSS reader was. I am pretty good at writing and expressing myself, so I have no problems writing comments. It gives me more experiences with writing than I would normally have. I can become a better writer by posting my comments on blogs. It also makes me think and examine what other people have stated. My critical thinking skills are improving at the same time. Therefore, my experiences with making posts and commenting are positive, and I will continue to read blogs in the future.

Cool Cat Teacher Blog - 5 Steps to Online Safety

This is a great topic that we have to teach ourselves as well as students. Who would have known there would be people out there wreaking havoc on the users of the Internet. I was surprised to learn about Trojans, viruses, and cyperbullying. Why are these people causing so many problems for others who are using the Internet to learn, communicate, and innocently. I liked the idea of taking a screenshot of anything that is inappropriate. I had not thought of this idead and just learned how to take a screenshot last week. So it will definitely be put to good use. Before we let children use the Internet, we have to take time to teach lessons on safety rules. What a great idea I had not considered.

Comments on Just A Passing Glance Thing #1

The habits I liked for a successful learner where to have goals in mind, use technology to your advantage, and look at problems as challenges. These are important habits if a person wants to achieve success in this world. You didn't like these habits the author chose and listed habits you thought were important for success. We all have our own lists and can pull from the authors, yours, and our own. I agree with your habits that one should be curious. Curiousity causes us to question things, search, and think. I always tell people that people who ask alot of questions, like myself, are smart. If you don't ask, then you will always wonder and never know. I also liked your habit of being open minded. Never let preconceived notions guide your way of thinking or you will fail. Go out and seek to find the answers for yourself. Everything should think about and have their own habits for being a successful, life-long learner.

Comments on 23 Things and Thoughts

One of the easiest habits for you to accomplish was using technology to your advantage. I can see why this is an important habit since it is all around us today. This is one of the hardest habits that I am trying to learn and accomplish. I am trying to remember all the new ways to use the internet to communicate, Skype, social networking, and WEb 2.0 tools, RSS reader, blogging, etc. My brain is trying to store all of this information that is new to me. I am learning so much information I would have ignored in the past because I was afraid of computers. I am going to have to work on this habit. I want using technology to my advantage to be one of the easiest habits for me. If not, I will get left behind in a world that is technology savy.

Thing #5

Teachers are really beginning to see Web 2.0 as a valuable tool. Lucie deLaBruere had some really good ideas involving teachers using these tools to communicate. Teachers are really isolated from one another and not able to exchange ideas. Now they are reaching out to others to generate new ideas. In this article, a teacher used Twitter to send a tweet asking for ideas to use the first day of school. She also asked for ideas in her blog. Afterwards, another teacher compiled a list by subjects in Wiki. What great ways Web 2.0 tools were used to help teachers communicate from all over the world and learn from one another. Three great tools were used for one purpose. I can now see how valuable these web tools are and would use them in similar ways to reach out to others and break away from the isolated classroom.

Thing #4

Blogging s a type of genre called literary fiction. It is this type of fiction because it is thought provoking and leaves a deep impression on the reader. It is different from other types of reading because the plot is hidden and not readily seen. It is different from other types of writing because it evokes feelings in the reader and motivates them to write in response. It is similar to reading and writing because it should be grammatically correct, relevant, and meaningful for others.
Commenting contributes to the meaning and writing because it helps others get a feel of what the author is writing about and how others are feeling. It allows others to give their opinion and share their experiences. Vickie Davis had some eye opening ideas in her ariticle that caused me to think about cell phone use in school. Blogging definitely facilitates learning because it activates higher order thinking skills. It leaves room for interpretation causing people to think critically; therefore, it facilitates learning.

Thing #2

I had to search the Internet to learn more about blogs and wikis. I had heard about them, but I had no idea what they were. I think Web 2.0 tools are very useful in the classroom. Students would be motivated to learn while using the computer which they love. It is an interactive mode of learning rather than traditional learning. I would use blogs and wikis to share and collaborate with other people. I would also use these tools with students to write and communicate interatively. I think they would enjoy corresponding with their classmates and sharing their thoughts and feelings through Web based tools. I would want to use these relevant tools to motivate students to learn while introducing them to technology that is used in the real world.

Thing #1

I think Habit #3 would be most challenging for me to employ in life. Viewing problems as challenges can be difficult. Most people don't want problems because they are difficult to overcome. Therefore, viewing a problem as a challenges is not the way most people look at them.

Habit #1 would be the easiest for me as a lifelong learner. When I decided to complete my masters at Austin Peay State University, I began with the end in mind. I set a goal that I wanted to accomplish. I did everything it took to accomplish this goal. I have other goals and I will do what is needed to achieve success.

Habit #2 is most important as I work through this course at APSU. I have to accept responsibility for my own learning. If I fail, it is by my own doing. I have to complete assignments, participate, read, and ask questions. My goal is to do all these things to pass this course.
